I love how the natural wood floor isn't totally concealed with the smaller area rug at the end of the bed. The dark wood juxtaposes nicely with the very light wood floor and white walls. Check out the lighting under the floating nightstands and bed.

This is actually a hotel room but I included it (I rarely include hotel rooms in bedroom galleries) because it's very well done and it really could be a fabulous regular bedroom. However, you have to like the totally exposed walk-in-shower concept to like this bedroom.

Out of 582,301 bedrooms analyzed, 9.94% featured a modern design. Though the name suggests it is quite new, the idea of modern interiors has been around since the late 1800s with it becoming more popularized between the 1920s and 1950s.

Modern vs. Contemporary

While the two tend to get confused, they are uniquely different in several aspects. The two are alike in the way that they incorporate a variety of styles into one beautiful design. However, modern separates itself from contemporary with clean-cut lines and a focus on balance as well as minimal décor. Everything in the modern design realm is simple yet efficient.

8 Tips on How to Design a Modern Bedroom

While the size might not be an option for a modern primary bedroom, color options and materials become incredibly important with this style. These charts and graphs illustrate what options were most frequently found inside of a modern bedroom.

1. Color Conscious

The modern design color palette can vary greatly but finds its core centering around neutrals like white or beige as well as black. Out of 332,061 bedrooms analyzed, white was chosen 19.93% of the time with beige and black trailing behind at 10.61% and 5.45%.

It is important to note that the modern color palette utilizes a striking color to accentuate itself. These could be bold greens, medium to dark reds, popping oranges, or even varying shades of blue. Violet and pink, however, were found the least. Aside from color, modern design also focuses on exposed metals and woods.

2. Wood Floors for the Win

The modern bedroom often chooses to utilize exposed woods in its flooring. Different types of hardwood flooring were found in 50.27% of 165,175 the bedrooms we analyzed.

Ceramic and Porcelain tiles can also be used, as well as vinyl or linoleum. A surprising 1.70% of bedrooms even featured concrete. When sticking with carpet, which 41.14% of bedrooms chose to do, plaids work wonders for modern primary bedroom design ideas.

3. Modern Bedroom Ceiling Design

One interesting aspect of modern design is the ceiling. There are many types of ceilings regular ceilings, there are some primary bedrooms with spectacular ceilings such as the cathedral, vaulted, wood beams, murals or as simple as being elevated with a modern chandelier.

When looking at the modern design of any type, notice the details such as flooring, ceilings, furniture, and colors. In some cases, it's very, very interesting.

4. Modern Bedroom Lighting

A frilly chandelier is not a modern bedroom make. Instead, look toward recessed lights, built-in wall lighting, tray ceiling lighting. The aim is no fixtures or small fixtures. Yes, many of our examples above and below include various lamps (modern lamps can look fabulous on nightstands), but avoid any clustering of anything and that includes lights.

5. Bed Design

6. Decorating a Modern Primary Bedroom

You want to keep decor knick-knacks to a minimum. Modern lighting art artwork is good; knick-knacks is bad. Modern design is sparse and often minimalist. Now, if it's contemporary you seek, that's a different matter altogether. Contemporary allows for more "stuff" such as shelving, lamps, etc.

7. Ten Trends

Even though modern is a specific style, there are still trends within the style. Here are some key trends.

Size: bigger is better. The current trend is to design large primary bedrooms.
Color: Gray
Bed: platform
Nightstand: floating
Lighting: recessed
Electronics: some, but wires concealed – i.e. wall-mounted TV. Charging stations for devices.
Floor: natural light wood
Windows: floor-to-ceiling with smart blinds
Seating: yes, yes, yes – sitting areas such as reading nook, armchairs, etc. are popular in modern primary bedrooms. You'll see several examples below.
Primary bathroom: Yes – and like bedroom size, bigger is better. We're talking both freestanding tub and walk-in showers, two sinks… the whole nine yards.
